Wang got a metallurgical physical chemistry degree from Central South University in 1987 before pursuing a master’s degree at the Beijing Nonferrous Research Institute. Wang’s graduation study on battery materials proved prescient—while peers pursued government positions, Wang recognized the promise of lithium-ion batteries.

In 1990, he joined a state-run battery research institute, where he rose to deputy director by the age of 26. But bureaucratic constraints frustrated him. When China’s reform era opened up private sector opportunities, Wang mortgaged everything to start BYD in 1995 with cousin Lü Xiangyang, starting with only 20 employees in a Shenzhen workshop.

The BYD Revolution Begins

Wang Chuanfu revolutionized the battery business with ¥2.5 million in seed funding, replacing costly automated lines with innovative labor-intensive techniques. His “human assembly lines” reduced expenses by 40%, undercutting Japanese competitors. BYD was the world’s second-largest rechargeable battery manufacturer by 2003, supplying Motorola and Nokia.

Shocking the Auto Industry

Analysts were taken aback by Wang’s 2003 acquisition of Qinchuan Automobile, who questioned if a battery manufacturer could construct automobiles. But his objective was clear: dominate electric automobiles by mastering battery technology. The gamble paid off. BYD’s F3DM (2008) was the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid, beating foreign manufacturers to the market.

Today, BYD outsells Tesla in China, with Warren Buffett’s 2008 investment increasing by 600%. Wang’s vertical integration—from lithium mines to semiconductors—makes BYD exceptionally resilient. The company now leads in EVs, buses, monorails, and energy storage, and Wang individually owns over 500 patents.

Family: The Quiet Support System

Wang married Li Qian, another BYD executive, during the company’s early years. The pair maintains a low profile, with their son Wang Yibo apparently working in BYD’s European business. Wang’s nephew Li Ke is an important R&D figure, extending the family’s close ties to the company.

The Fortune Powering China’s EV Surge

Wang Chuanfu’s net worth will top $18 billion by 2024, with his 18% share in BYD accounting for the majority of his wealth. The company’s Hong Kong-listed shares have increased 1,200% since 2020, as BYD dominates China’s EV market, selling over 3 million vehicles each year.

Unlike more visible billionaires, Wang invests substantially in R&D.
