Arterton was born with polydactyly, a disorder that causes additional fingers, which were removed by a doctor shortly after her birth at North Kent Hospital in Gravesend. Her mother, Sally-Anne Heap, works as a cleaner, while her father, Barry J. Arterton, works as a welder. Arterton grew up on a council estate with her mother and younger sister, Hannah Arterton, who is also an actor, after her parents split when she was young.
