Elizabeth Acevedo is a poet and author of Dominican descent. The Poet X, With the Fire on High, and Clap When You Land are among her works. The Poet X is a New York Times bestseller, a Carnegie Medal winner, and a National Book Award winner. She also won the Michael L. Printz Award in 2019, the Pura Belpre Award in 2018, and the Boston-Globe Hornbook Award Prize for Best Children’s Fiction in 2018. She currently resides in Washington, DC.
Biography of Elizabeth Acevedo
Acevedo was born in Harlem, New York, to Dominican immigrants. She is the only daughter and youngest child. Acevedo decided she wanted to be a rapper when she was 12 years old but later learned she truly wanted to recite poetry. She subsequently went to the Beacon School, where she met Abby Lublin, an English instructor. Lublin invited Acevedo to attend her after-school poetry club in order to help her improve her writing. Elizabeth competed in her first poetry slam at the Nuyorican Poets Café when she was 14, and went on to perform in open mics all around the city, including the Bowery Poetry Club and Urban Word NYC.
She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts from George Washington University, which she designed herself utilizing classes in acting, English, and sociology. She went on to receive an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Maryland, where she also taught undergraduate creative writing courses.
Elizabeth Acevedo, an eighth-grade teacher in Prince George’s County, Maryland, was encouraging a particular kid to read more. “These books aren’t about us,” she was told when she questioned this student why she wasn’t reading. Acevedo discovered that it was the lack of diversity in her pupils’ books, not their ability, that was affecting them.
Career Journey of Elizabeth Acevedo
Acevedo entered the classroom as a Teach for America Corps trainee in 2010 after graduating from George Washington University. She went on to teach eighth grade English in Maryland’s Prince George’s County. Despite the fact that the town’s population was 78 percent Latino and 20% black, she was the town’s first Latina teacher to teach a core subject.
She has previously won the National Slam and served as the head coach of the D.C. Youth Slam Team. She’s performed at Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the State Theatre of South Africa, Bozar in Brussels, and Kosovo’s National Library.
Her superb poetry videos have been featured in Latina Magazine, Cosmopolitan, the Huffington Post, and Upworthy, and she has given multiple TED Talks. She has also written three young adult books. Beastgirl and Other Origin Myths was a contender for the YesYes Chapbook Prize in 2016. The Poet X, her debut novel, was released in 2018. Acevedo’s third novel, With the Fire on High, was released in May 2019. Clap When You Land, her fourth novel, will be released in May 2020. It’s about two sisters who grow up in different countries, unknowing of each other, but discover one other after their father passes away. The book was nominated for a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award.
