Bob Barnard: What does he do for living? His Career?

In 1957, he played in Sydney with a small band led by guitarist Ray Price. He continued to perform semi-professionally in Melbourne, sometimes recording with a band lead by his brother, such as The Naked Dance. Barnard subsequently joined Bell’s band when Bell phoned him in 1957 with an unfulfilled job offer in Sydney. This resulted in a tour of his own country, as well as excursions to New Zealand and Papua New Guinea with pop singer Frank Ifield.

In 1963, Armstrong paid a visit to Australia, and Bell’s band met him at the airport, where Barnard had a short contact with his hero. Barnard assembled his first band for an EMI Records session in 1971, which resulted in the release of 16 Jazz Greats, and his second band three years later. The band toured Sydney before traveling to the United States in 1976 to play at the Bix Beiderbecke Festival in Davenport, Iowa, where they were a huge success. After 10 years, the band’s renown had dwindled significantly, and this, along with the loss of a key member, trombonist John Costelloe, forced Barnard to limit the ensemble to four members.

Barnard performed throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Southeast Asia, and a number of European nations during the 1980s and 1990s. Among his numerous collaborations are Ruby Braff, Peanuts Hucko, Bob Wilber, Kenny Davern, Dick Carey, and Milt Hinton. Under Ralph Sutton’s name, he and his brother, Len, recorded two superb albums for Sackville Records, Partners In Crime and Easy Street.

Barnard’s recording and performing ensembles have included quartets, nine- and ten-piece bands, and even strings. Barnard spent the mid-1990s working on an album on Australian composers, which was partly funded by the Australian Council for the Arts. Barnard wanted to spend more time in Europe and the United States by the end of the 1990s, since interest in traditional jazz in his hometown had waned.

Barnard’s solo lines are executed with ease and a wide, rich tone. Although his fame and renown grew as a result of his tremendous playing in the traditional jazz style, this was just a small part of his immense gift. This is evident in his lyrical mainstream ballad playing, which pays respect to guitarists he admires like Bobby Hackett, Braff, and, of course, Armstrong. Barnard has also composed many songs, including “Black Stump Stomp,” “Smackarooney,” and “Rainbow Hill,” a catchy ballad he recorded in New York in 1995.
