Haney was a gifted painter and sculptor who created “The Guardian” statue that stands atop the state Capitol dome.

According to Haney’s Arts Council biography, “the towering statue reflects the heroism of Oklahomans and their capacity to survive the most awful calamities like as the explosion at the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City.” “The Guardian serves as a reminder that the genuine guards of Oklahoma, our elected officials and others, are working every day within the hallways of our stately Capitol to better our already wonderful state.”

His roots go deep in history

In a 2014 interview, Haney highlighted how his art was steeped in his background as he arranged a new exhibition of his work.

“I have the capacity to tell stories, about native people and their history, since my grandfather and father were outstanding storytellers.” So, in some ways, I think I’m still the guardian of the traditions,” Haney said. According to his mother, Haney began sketching what he saw and sculpting with clay at the age of two.

“At the age of six, I made Abraham Lincoln’s head out of red clay from our front yard,” Haney remarked. “At Bacone College in Muskogee, I began studying Indian art with Dr. Dick West. In 1965, I graduated from the Oklahoma City University School of Art after attending the University of Arizona. I developed my technique and studied about realist and surrealist painting at OCU.”
