Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. was born on October 8, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina. Jackson was a member of the Greenville Eight, a group of eight African-Americans who staged a sit-in at the all-white Greenville Public Library on July 16, 1960, in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. They were all detained for “disorderly conduct,” and his pastor bailed them free. Later, he began working with Martin Luther King Jr., who was so impressed with him that he assigned him the task of opening a frontline office for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in Chicago.
