“Knowing him and his family for the last few decades has been a privilege for me. He was a prominent figure in both the political and corporate worlds.
“He loved Northern Ireland, and he was committed in all that he did.” “He cared deeply about the employment and skills training of local people.”
Assembly member for the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) in North Antrim, Robin Swann, referred to Sir William’s passing as a “tremendous loss, not just to his family circle but also to unionism, the business community, the Loyal Orders, and the Christian Church.” Swann made this statement after Sir William passed away.
“Sir William Wright will rank as one of north Antrim’s most legendary figures,” he said.
“He built Wrightbus into a global brand and his dedication to unionism was also known throughout the globe, especially in his past role as a Ballymena councilor.”
Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) leader and North Antrim assembly member, Jim Allister, said Sir William was “an iconic giant in Ballymena and Northern Ireland”.
“No one has left a more endeavored mark on the economy than Sir William,” Mr. Allister said.
“Many people had very good jobs in Ballymena and got many years of employment thanks to his contribution.
“He was also very much involved in the local community, he served as a counselor at a time and was very prominent in his faith.”
2019 saw Wrightbus at the epicenter of a storm over Ballymena’s Green Pastures Church.
Jeff, the son of Sir William, was the church’s pastor and a key shareholder in Wrightbus at the time.
When Wrightbus entered administration, the family attributed the company’s demise to a decline in bus demand, but many employees expressed worry that money given to the church had harmed the company.
