Romaine Gustave Solbert, better known by her artist and photographer alias Ronni Solbert, was best recognized for her work as an illustrator of books. Some of the books she illustrated include The Pushcart War and more than a dozen more titles written by her collaborator Jean Merrill.

It was verified by Ms. Solbert’s niece, Lisa Solbert Sheldon, that Ms. Solbert died away at her house in Randolph, Vermont, in 1970, the same year that she and Ms. Merrill had relocated there.

Solbert moved back to New York in order to pursue a career in the arts, namely in illustration and painting. The Museum of Modern Art has a print by Solbert in its collection. The first time Solbert saw Merrill was in New York (who, coincidentally, had also grown up near Rochester). During their time as residents in Tompkins Square Park in New York City’s East Village, the couple was active in the many community events that were held there. In 1962, Solbert and Merrill made the decision to buy a farm in the area of Washington, Vermont, so that they could spend the summers there. In 1971, they uprooted their family and moved to Randolph, Vermont.
Solbert was a faculty member in the Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts program at Vermont College in Montpelier. Her paintings were destroyed in the fire that broke out at her Randolph studio, so after that she began focusing on sculpture, photography, and works on paper instead. She continued her artistic career until she was 90 years old.
