Politics
Yeo was a member of the People’s Action Party throughout his time in politics. From the years 2006 and 2011, he was a Member of Parliament for the Hong Kah GRC, and between 2011 and 2015, he represented the Chua Chu Kang GRC. After the general elections in 2015, he decided to leave politics, and Yee Chia Hsing was elected to fill the seat he had vacated.

In 1988, Yeo was given a call at the bar. Together in 1992, Alvin Yeo, Sundaresh Menon, Wong Meng Meng, and Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara established the legal firm that is now known as WongPartnership. When Yeo was appointed as senior counsel in the year 2000, he was the youngest attorney to ever hold that position. Three justices from the Court of Appeal filed a complaint against Yeo with the Law Society on July 31, 2017, stating that Yeo may have overcharged for his services.
From November 2010 to June 2015, Yeo defended a rich widow in a variety of court matters, and the widow’s legal fees totaled $8.8 million by the end of the process. The inability of the client was a source of worry for the judges, in addition to the high expense of the charges. After some time had passed, a reduction of 32.5% was applied to the bill. On June 19, 2019, a Law Society disciplinary panel ruled against the complainant and dismissed the matter.
On June 24, 2019, the Law Society submitted an application to the High Court of Singapore requesting that the tribunal be reviewed. After coming to the conclusion that the initial charges brought by the Law Society were improperly worded because they failed to take into account the client’s lack of mental capacity, as well as the fact that the initial tribunal had determined that the mental capacity issues were not within the scope of the complaint, the High Court later ordered for another round of disciplinary tribunal hearings to be held on January 8, 2020. This was done in spite of some initial concerns raised by the Appeal judges.
Justice Valerie Thean of the High Court responded to the situation as “unfortunate” and highlighted a legislative statute from 2008 that prevents any kind of judicial review while disciplinary processes are still in progress. As a consequence of this, the Court was only able to evaluate the matter after the disciplinary processes had been completed. Yeo’s legal representatives raised an objection when they learned that their client would be subject to yet another probe.
