A statement that was made on Sunday by the booster club of the Las Cruces school said that Romero, who was 17 years old, had gone away on Saturday evening in a hospital in El Paso. Since collapsing on August 26 when the Knights were playing an away game in Deming, he has been getting medical treatment ever since.
The message that was published on Sunday started with the words, “It is with great regret that we report that Abraham Romero passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 17 with his mother at his side.”
That proceeded by saying, “Seventeen years is not nearly long enough, but it’s all he was given and it is extremely easy to concentrate on what we lost, but the actual measure of life is not in the influence it has on our world, not on the time that he was with us.”
The senior football player had been hurt early in the game while playing running back, but according to the coach of the Knights football team, Steve Castille, it took around twenty minutes for the player to pass out in between plays after the injury.
